CentOS to Rocky Linux migration demo
Rocky Linux can easily replace CentOS IN-PLACE using a great migration script which I demonstrate in this video. In this example I have a basic web server running in CentOS, and then I migrate it over to Rocky.
See the Rocky installation video here: ruclips.net/video/xHrk9BncaZw/видео.html

What are Flatpaks? | How to install & permissions
Просмотров 27 тыс.3 года назад
Flatpaks have many great advantages. They can be sandboxed to protect your system. They usually carry newer versions of software than repos. And they are distro independent, which means they run as they should on any distro that supports Flatpaks. In this video I'll go over how they work, how to install them, and how to change what permissions they have. Flathub : www.flathub.org Consider suppo...

Using FOSS in Linux (or not)
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
I see too often people getting talked down to for not using FOSS, or for using blobs/proprietary software, bloat, a certain desktop environment or distro. This toxicity needs to stop. But most importantly, if you're one of the people who have been treated this way, you've done NOTHING wrong. Other than breaking actual laws, you can do anything you want with your system. Logical Volume Management - What is LVM & how to use it (and WHY you should use it)

I'll also show you how to extend an LVM (or, grow an LVM) and the extra steps in extending a swap...

This is probably a function of my age (80). I'm seriously thinking of abandoning Windows and move to Linux. However, after listening this comprehensive description of the Linux structure, fear is setting in. Probably the only software I'd be installing would be LibreOffice to replace MS Office, an email handler to replace MS Office Outlook, and then Firefox as my browser. Where would my various LibreOffice program segments be stored?

Hi, I had a 2 TB internal HDD with a SINGLE partition for just data whose master file table (MFT) got corrupted for reasons unknown. After a while, of connecting and disconnecting, the drive formatted into probably two FAT/FAT32 partitions of just 500+ MB and 500+ MB. Later, whenever I tried to re-connect this drive, I used to get BSOD "Unexpected kernel mode trap" error in any Windows OS on HDD or USB like HBCD PE. I logged in using a Linux distro and deleted (formatted?) all the partitions using G-Parted. Is it possible to get back the SINGLE partition the disk had before these new two FAT partitions? I tried with MiniTools, but did not get the partition size that matches near 2 TB, as disk was almost full with just 20 GB free space.

If you're moving from Windows (with its A, B, C, D, etc partition assignments you really DO need to watch this. This is just one reason that linux is so great. You can install a distro to ANYWHERE.. not just the C:\ drive! And yeah /home/you or /home/somebodyElse can be confusing at first but its so incredibly elegant that you'll quickly wonder WHY Windows doesn't use a gigantic "tree" like linux! You know to be honest I don't even know where some of my partitions are physically located. But I do know where all my DATA is (well maybe NOT the actual physical location but I don't need to know as long as I can back it up to where I KNOW the backup physically is!). Yeah I back my data to removable hot swappable drives. BTW.. Do NOT install / (root) or /home to SSD. You can install /backup or whatever there but NOT your major directories. Yeah always assign those partitions to HDD, okay? Lastly yeah I know.. this kinda incredible customizable stuff can breed confusion to the linux newbie but after awhile you'll realize it becomes second nature. An example is that linux has more than one file manager.. dolphin, nautilus, nemo are all file managers and you can generally use them all in a specific distro. however ubuntu uses nautilus by default while mint uses nemo... stuff like that can become confusing as well. Finally there's a a whole slew of screen grabs... shutter, spectacle, screenshot to name a few. I sometimes use two of them to grab stuff by copying one from another! Yeah Windows has just ONE and the last time I saw a friend using it I told him that thing really sucks! I mean you couldn't even copy a menu or the mousepointer with it!

Dorian. If you are still monitoring this, it seems this is still a valid solution for me. If you still use this process, of if not but remember what you did, did you create the directory structure on the 1tb drive or did the download of the packages create that structure. If you manually did so, what steps did/do you take to create this structure. Later

It's really unnecessary. More than half of these directories/partitions are both superfluous and ambiguous. 5 abstractions of bin/sbin and you'll have to read the conf to find out where anything actually went. It's a symptom of a fundamental design and standards issue and literally one of the biggest draws to BSD tbqh. I'd sooner go back to DOS than subject myself to present day linux.

So , 1- Appimages go anywhere. 2- Anything installed using package manager yay,aur go in separate folders. 3- Anything from disciver, flathub or discover gets separate folders. 4- Libraries are haywire. ( flathub will be in Libraries folders and applications inside it ,and same with others.) Or they end up in home filder. Who made this ?
